Griezmann, priority of Bielsa for Bilbao!

Marcelo Bielsa is expected to return to the bench of Athletic Bilbao, but he would have demanded the recruitment of Frenchman Antoine Griezmann.

Antoine Griezmann, who came through Real Sociedad’s youth academy and is contracted to Atletico, could be headed to Bilbao in what Iñaki Arechabaleta, a candidate for the club’s presidency, describes as one of the big transfers of the summer.

Griezmann is contractually bound to Atletico on a two-year loan from Barcelona that expires next summer, but he could leave in the next transfer window if a substantial offer comes in for him. Arechabaleta explained during his campaign that the Maconian has a good chance of landing in San Mames.

Griezmann has been asked about the will of Marcelo Bielsa, who will return to Athletic if Arechabaleta is elected on June 24 and could be presented by the end of the month. The Argentine coach had asked former president Josu Urrutia to sign the French striker, who was then still at Real, during his first stint at Bilbao.

Atlético is keen on Griezmann
Arechabaleta is therefore ready to make the effort to satisfy El Loco by betting on one of his main La Liga stars. This would certainly be a huge coup for Bilbao.

As for Atletico’s position on Griezmann, club president Enrique Cerezo said last month, “He is an Atletico player, he is under contract and he will continue with us. Griezmann has one year left on his loan deal with Barca. If he plays a minimum of 45 minutes in more than 50% of Atleti’s games next season, he will automatically trigger a compulsory purchase option and the Rojiblancos will be obliged to buy him for 40 million euros.”

If he joins Bilbao, Griezmann will not be the first Frenchman to wear their colors. Bixente Lizarazu and Aymeric Laporte did it before him. However, the latter had the particularity of being Basque.
