The Dutch defender is still undecided about his contract extension in Turin and is waiting for progress to be convinced.

At the age of 22, Matthijs De Ligt will have a big decision to make for his future: extend at Juventus or take on a new challenge. Arriving in 2019 from Ajax when all of Europe was clamoring for him, the Juventus central defender is weighing his options before signing a contract extension with the Italian giant.

De Ligt wants to make the best choice for his career

De Ligt has seen the end of Juventus’ domination of Italian soccer but also since the difficulties of the bianconeri club to rebound and especially on the European stage. The Dutch defender is currently under contract with the Turin club until 2024, and although he is in talks for a renewal, he has not yet made a final decision on his future.

Indeed, aware of his talent and ability to bounce back in one of the best European clubs, the Dutchman has demanded improvements on the field from the club, saying that the current level is “not enough”. In an interview with NOS, De Ligt revealed that negotiations are ongoing with Juventus about a possible contract extension, but that he is open to other sporting projects.

If Juve are not competitive, De Ligt will leave

The unimpressive performances on the field are a matter of concern and he did not mince words to express himself. “Two fourth places in a row are not enough, we need to improve in this direction because these are disappointing results. Juventus is a club that always wants and must become champions,” De Ligt admitted.

Juve: Chiellini wants to play abroad

The former Ajax defender has been linked with a move to Manchester United after Erik ten Hag took over at Old Trafford. De Ligt made a name for himself under ten Hag during his time at Ajax, and he played a crucial role in helping the Dutch giants reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2018-19. De Ligt made 70 appearances for Ajax under the Dutch manager and won the Dutch Eredivisie and KNVB Cup double in 2018-19. He has since moved to Juventus, where he made 42 appearances last season.
