Zinedine Zidane speaks out about his future

Without a club, the 1998 world champion does not close the door to PSG in the future and dreams of becoming a coach of Les Bleus.

Long announced as the main target of PSG to coach the capital club next season, Zinedine Zidane will not make his return on a bench with the French champion. Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, the president of PSG, confirmed it earlier this week in his interview with Le Parisien and it will most likely be Christophe Galtier who will succeed Mauricio Pochettino.

“Completing the circle with the French team
For all that, Zinedine Zidane, who celebrates his 50th birthday on Thursday, June 23, has not made a cross on his coaching career. The 1998 world champion is simply waiting for the right project and many observers believe that he is waiting for the French team, and that therefore, he will not take the head of a club before the World Cup in Qatar next November in order to be available if Didier Deschamps decides to leave at the end of the competition, or if he is dismissed in case of bad results of the Blues.

50 years of Zinedine Zidane: relive his career in ten dates

For his 50th birthday, Zinedine Zidane gave an interview to L’Equipe in which he finally talks about his future. The former Real Madrid coach did not hide his wish and his dream to become the French national team coach: “I want to, of course. I hope to be one day. When? It doesn’t depend on me. But I want to come full circle with the French team. I knew this French team as a player. And it’s the best thing that ever happened to me! (He puts his hand on his heart.) But really! It’s the ultimate.

“PSG? Never say never”

“And so, because I lived through that and today I’m a coach, the French team is firmly anchored in my head. [I don’t know (when, editor’s note). If it has to be done, it will be done, at that time or not. When I say that I want to take the French team one day, I assume it. Today, a team is in place. With its objectives. But if the opportunity arises afterwards, then I will be there. Once again, it does not depend on me. My deepest desire is there. The French team is the most beautiful thing there is,” added Zinedine Zidane.

PSG: Zidane, Galtier, the sports project … the truths of Nasser Al-Khelaïfi

When asked about the possibility of coaching PSG one day, Zinedine Zidane, who is very attached to Marseille, did not close the door to the capital club: “You should never say never. Especially when you are a coach today. When I was a player, I had the choice, almost all the clubs. Coach, there are not fifty clubs where I can go. There are two or three possibilities. […] If I go back to a club, it is to win. I say it in all modesty. That’s why I can’t go anywhere.

“For other reasons, too, I might not be able to go everywhere. What other reasons? Language, for example. Some conditions make it more difficult… When people say to me, ‘Do you want to go to Manchester?’ I understand English, but I don’t have a full command of it. I know that there are coaches who go to clubs without speaking the language. But I work differently. To win, there are a lot of elements that come into play. It’s a global context. I know what I need to win,” concluded the Frenchman. If the Premier League can forget about the 1998 World Champion for the moment, it is not the case of PSG, which may return to the charge sooner or later to bring Zizou on the bench.
